Young Parent Program - A Support/Education Class for Teen Parents

The program is designed to provide pregnant or parenting teens with information about pregnancy, birth, parenting and community resources. Open to District 728 students and area residents who may not be in school. 

The Young Parent Program seeks to:

  • Provide support and information for expectant parents
  • Provide support and information to adolescent parents

The Program Offers:

  • Information covering prenatal care, labor and delivery and fetal development
  • Access to other agencies for health care, financial information, etc.
  • Discussion of choices - parenting, adoption, foster care, etc.
  • Obtain credits toward High School diploma
  • Child development
  • Parenting techniques
  • Relationships
  • Life management skills
  • Opportunities to be involved in a mentoring program
  • Home visits
  • A safe environment to problem solve while discussing concerns, challenges and joys of teen parents

How do I get started?
Young parents who are interested in the program can talk with a school social worker, school counselor, school nurse, call the Early Childhood Family Education office at 763-241-3524, or for more information, call Kathleen at 763-241-3500 x5584. Prior to starting the program, a licensed educator will meet with you one-on-one to determine your needs.

Classes are offered at the Handke Center, 1170 Main Street, Elk River. Class meets 2 times a week for those students who are pregnant and 2 times a week for those who are parenting. Classes are scheduled in the afternoons during the school year for 2 hours.

The Young Parent Program is offered by Ivan Sand Community High School and ISD 728 Early Childhood Family Education.

Funding for this program is provided by Wright County Family Services Collaborative and ISD 728 Family and Children's Collaborative.
