ABOUT US

Welcome to ISD 728 Community Education!

Handke 2

Our mission is to build community through citizen involvement and lifelong learning while educating, inspiring and empowering all of our learners across ISD 728.

ISD 728, with schools in Elk River, Otsego, Rogers and Zimmerman, services more than 61,000 residents. District 728 Community Education provides quality programs and services for all ages, from the very youngest learners through to adult and senior citizens. Citizen advisory councils assist staff in identifying needs and meeting them in the most effective ways.

We are located in the historic Handke Center, located on Main Street in Elk River. Programs housed at the Handke Center include:

  • Community Education
  • Early Childhood Family Education (ECFE)
  • Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE)
  • Discovery Learning Preschool
  • Early Childhood Screening
  • American Indian Education Program

Built in 1930, the Handke Center is ISD 728’s oldest facility. It served as the District’s only high school from 1930 to 1961, then as a junior high school, and later as Handke Elementary and the Handke Magnet (elementary school). It has been home to the current array of programs since 2001. A portion of the main floor of the 1930 building was remodeled and restored to its original 1930 luster during 2005-06. In 2014, the north wing was completely renovated along with the main entrance from the parking lot.
